Uranus in History

Let’s take a journey. The most recent ingress of Uranus into Taurus, before the current one which began May 15, 2018, occurred in 1934 – 1942. This period of time coincides with the Great Depression and the beginning of World War II. This was a tumultuous and painful period that scarred a generation of people. Uranian energy brings about sudden changes. It is often associated with calamities, beginnings, crises, debates, deviation, evolution, and the exploration of new frontiers. The interesting thing is these energies are seemingly designed to initiate a period of awakening and enlightenment. From the disruption and volatility often emerges flashes of inspiration, originality, and invention.

Looking back to the 1934 – 1942 period, in the midst of the upsets and upheavals, came government experimentation to resolve economic crises and a commitment to building infrastructure and industry to meet global needs for overcoming international conflict, freeing those oppressed and displaced by war, and envisioning a more just society and economy.

To more fully understand what was happening here, one must incorporate practical Taurus into the equation, which likes tradition and resists change because it wants security. For example, Taurus rules nearly everything related to money such as cash, checkbooks, banks and bankers, profits, borrowing and spending, securities and stocks, treasuries, and financiers. Taurus also governs cattle, copper, jewelry, art, and possessions of all kinds. In addition, it is associated with beauty, both artistic and personal through adornment, and our response to beauty, culture, and the arts. It’s especially fond of music, singing, and sculpture.

Turning back for a moment to Uranus, where does this archetype come from? According to Greek Mythology, he was the God of the sky and heavens. He visited Gaia (Earth) every night to mate with her, and it was in their nightly unions that the 12 Titans were born. However, Uranus felt threatened by his offspring and would hide them away deep in the earth. Gaia wasn’t pleased with these disruptions and plotted against Uranus with the strongest of her Titans. Their son, Saturn (aka Cronus), stepped up to the plate and castrated Uranus. As his genitals fell to the sea, Aphrodite, the goddess of love was born—something beautiful arising from a period of chaos. (1)

So, it is the role of Uranus to shake up the status quo, creating incredible shifts, that in turn bring forth freedom, liberation and emancipation. And because it is Uranus in Taurus, those shifts are/will be focused on the Taurusian themes mentioned above. Make no mistake though, when rebel Uranus enters stubborn and stability seeking Taurus, tumult can definitely ensue.

On a more personal level, Uranus has been transiting through a range of 2 degrees and 10 degrees of Taurus all of 2020, with part of the year it having turned retrograde (on August 15, at 10 degrees and retracing its path back through some of those earlier degrees. If you have planets in Taurus at these degrees, or you have other planets in your natal chart at these degrees you are likely being impacted by Uranian energy. It’s also important to make note of which house in your natal chart it’s transiting (passing) through as well, as these areas of your life will also be affected.

Whatever Uranus is contacting for you personally in your natal chart, is where you will most likely experience a range of potential manifestations. These can be feelings of wanting to break free, rebel, or express your own uniqueness to experiencing a sudden upset, disruption, or change. Another way Uranus can impact things is to bring flashes of inspiration, an awakening, or even enlightenment. It is further important to understand what planet (i.e. Mercury, Moon, Venus etc.) that Uranus is interacting with, as well as what the angular relationship is that it has to them.

Uranus is the great agent of change and awakening. The irony is that a true awakening often feels more like a breakdown. Unpredictable circumstances and events force you to adapt. Some of the changes will be fantastical, and honestly some of them will just suck. Sorry, just the way this one works. All I can say with certainty to you is that wherever Uranus’ lightening strikes in your life, you will undergo an initiation that will change your life in a significant way.

Curious where you might experience this? Let’s talk…
