It is through the lens of an astrological natal chart that an astrologer can peer into the soul of another. In doing so, an enormous amount of insight can be gleaned about how a person operates in their life as well as what their intentions are for being here engaged in this great mystery. One critical piece of information that can be ascertained is what type of cognitive process an individual uses and prefers. In astrology, the planetary body associated with thinking, speaking and learning energies is Mercury. These are the energies we use to connect with others and employ discernment to what we choose to communicate in any given moment. Mercury is most at home in the signs of Gemini and Virgo, however, based on your birth date, birthplace and birth time can be found in any of the zodiac signs.
In pondering Mercurial matters, which are directly connected to our words, I was reminded once again of the importance of language. What we choose to say, speak aloud and express is so critical. Also, how we choose to do so. My experience has been that these things soon become our reality. Many years ago, I read a powerful book, by Don Miquel Ruiz entitled “The Four Agreements” which drove this point home in a penetrating manner. Our intentions manifest through our words. Raised up in the shamanic tradition of the Toltecs, Don Miquel uses ancient wisdom to help with modern issues. The first agreement is “to be impeccable with your word”. He implores the reader to:
“Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love."
Depending upon how we choose to use our words, they can set us free, or they can enslave us even more than we know. In fact, I would further add that words are the most powerful tool we possess as humans; words are magic. Which is another critical locus of the first agreement, depending upon what we choose to say we can be invoking either white or black magic. White magic words consist of communication that bolsters, builds and comes from a place of love. Black magic words, as you might suspect, are hurtful, careless and intentionally as well as unintentionally cause harm. They are toxic, planting a poison that can have a lasting impact on someone’s life.
Another renowned teacher who has spoken to this topic is the great Sufi poet, Rumi. He encouraged that when we ponder what it is, we are going to say, that we let it pass through three gates before doing so… “Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?” To reiterate, words possess great power. Words activate our intentions and beliefs. Once activated, they can create our very existence. Be mindful of this as well as the very real human tendency to project our own “stuff”, like anger, discontent, unhappiness, lack of belief, jealousy, fear and the list goes on. If in such moments we can all remember the three gates we undoubtedly will bring ourselves into closer alignment with our “higher self”.
In conclusion, may we all learn to become better gatekeepers of the words we choose to speak or write. By passing your speech through this simply filter you will not only elevate yourself but you will elevate others. You will become an inspiration and potentially impact people’s lives in a positive direction, not just today, but maybe forever. Words can effect change. Use this awesome power to bless everyone you encounter on your path and you in turn will be blessed too.
Thanks !
