In 1970, The Five Man Electrical Band released a song entitled, “Signs”. It rose as high as number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and went on to be a gold record. If you are feeling nostalgic you can listen here: https://youtu.be/oeT5otk2R1g
The song was a lament of sorts concerning the myriads of signs the protagonist was encountering in his daily life that were restrictive, controlling and in his opinion ridiculous. This isn’t what this blog is about. But I thought it would be a good way of getting your attention. The tune is very “catchy”.
The type of signs I would like to briefly explore are those that are around us every day, attempting to get our attention, warn us, guide us and help us stay on track. This concept speaks to the shamanic world view that everything is connected in an energetic web that we do not fully comprehend; nonetheless it is. What intrigued me about astrology when I first began my studies was that it also finds its basis in this so called energetic web. Zodiacal signs are significators of energies. Those energies manifest in matters unfolding here on earth. I do not believe these signs are causal, however, but rather indicate possibilities. They are merely symbolic messengers. Look at your watch right now, mine says 12:29 pm. Is my watch making it 12:29 pm? No, it is not, it is simply acting as an intermediary conveying information. Something else is controlling time, its just bringing structure to how I process it.
Whenever I ponder signs, I can’t help but think of a famous encounter the Swiss psychologist, Carl Jung had with a patient he had been treating for years. Jung was sitting in a partially dark office with his back to a window listening to a patient who he characterized as a “difficult case”. She was of high education and serious demeanor. Rationalism was her overriding operating system. This said, she was in therapy with Jung in attempt to have a psychological breakthrough. Admittedly half listening on this particular day, having experienced session after session of little to no progress, a story the woman was telling caused Jung to perk-up and be a bit more attentive.
She told him of a dream she had the night before of receiving a necklace as a gift, the necklace was adorned with a golden scarab beetle. It was a costly piece. At that very moment, Jung recounts that he heard a tapping noise on his office window. Turning to see what it was, to his surprise there was a scarab beetle continuously banging itself against the glass. He says he pushed the window open and the beetle flew into his office and landed on his hand. Spontaneously, he turned to the woman, extended his hand and proclaimed, “here is your scarab”. Therapy changed dramatically from that moment forward. Jung went on to coin this incidence and many others as examples of synchronicity.
My message today is that these “signs” happen daily. The universe and all within it is a massive interconnected network of energy. I would further propose that these energies communicate constantly in ways we can’t even begin to imagine. But when we begin to listen, pay attention and dial into the right frequency, we begin to hear and notice. And when you begin to hear and notice, you realize that the signs (communications) can come from countless places; animals, insects, clouds, other people, songs, books, rainbows, numbers and yes, an astrological chart. What will you see today?
