Mars Squares Saturn: Tension at the Month’s Opening
September begins with tension between Mars and Saturn, traditionally considered the two malefic planets. On September 1, Mars in Cancer at 13°39′ forms an exact square with retrograde Saturn in Aries at 13°39′. A square occurs when two planets are 90 degrees apart and, in astrology, signifies conflicting energies that create enough friction to prompt a response or action.
| Factor | Symbolic Tension |
| Mars in Cancer | Defensive action; action driven by belonging, family, homeland, memory, emotional security, protection, or grievance |
| Saturn in Aries | Restrained initiative; difficulty, burden, delay, or accountability around leadership, assertion, military action, pioneering, and independence |
A key feature of this square is that it occurs in cardinal signs, which are associated with swift, anxious, and sometimes naïve action. Saturn is also retrograde, emphasizing unfinished business, review, or structural correction. Both planets, in addition, are in their fall, poorly placed and lacking their usual stability or resources. As a result, their energies may emerge in irregular, unstable, or disproportionate ways.

One thing seems to ring true as we track this recurring aspect through time: Cancer Mars square Aries Saturn, at its best, turns raw anger or protectiveness into disciplined, patient action. At its worst, it can manifest as retaliatory behavior, leadership paralysis, homeland anxieties, conflict over boundaries, or clashes between urgent emotional demands and hard limits.
Since the United States was founded on July 4, 1776, Mars in Cancer has formed a square with Saturn in Aries 12 times, including this current occurrence, the 12 exact contacts spread out across roughly 250 years.
September 8: Venus Trines the North Node
Next up, on September 8, is what I’d characterize as a clarion call to move away from excessive personal validation and toward participation in something wider than oneself: Venus trines the North Node of the Moon. Venus in Libra tilts its head toward diplomacy, aesthetics, fairness, negotiation, partnership, social intelligence, and choices based on values. The North Node in Aquarius is a developmental pull toward independence within groups, friendship, networks, reform, unconventional futures, shared ideals, and contribution to the collective.
An interpretive rendition of this Venus-North Node trine: a gracious connection, fair exchange, artistic or relational opening that helps move you toward a more liberated, collaborative, and future-facing life direction.
September 10: A Busy Astrological Day
September 10 is a crowded one, Venus enters Scorpio, opposes Taurus Chiron (both at exactly 00°14′), and Uranus stations retrograde, all within moments of each other.
Venus Enters Scorpio
When Venus enters Scorpio, it finds itself in the sign of its detriment, meaning there’s some discomfort involved, and a heightened potential for being misunderstood. The full expression of Venusian energy can feel laborious here, and its natural inclinations tend to deviate from the expected.
In basic terms, the shift is from a normally harmonious, mutually interested, and socially graceful Venus to one that craves emotional depth, intensity, and attachment, even major transformation. The need for balance and pleasantness gives way to something more real, private, and consequential. On an even more profound level, Venus in Scorpio seeks honesty, exclusivity, erotic depth, and evidence of commitment.
Framed against Venus’s traditional themes of relationships, values, money, and creativity, the shift becomes highly visible:
- Affection becomes more selective, passionate, and psychologically driven.
- Money shifts from Venus’s usual associations toward strategic use of resources, emotional investment, shared finances, legacy concerns, and exposure to what’s hidden, taboo, or psychologically charged.
Simply put relationships, desires, values, and creative instincts become less about appearances and more focused on emotional truth, loyalty, intimacy, and the effort to transform what has overstayed its usefulness.
Venus Opposes Chiron in Taurus
Also on September 10, Scorpio Venus reaches an exact opposition to Taurus Chiron. Because Venus moves quickly, by September 15 it will have moved on to 3° Scorpio, separating from the aspect, but this brief contact appears to activate a larger, evolving theme: Chiron’s long transit through Taurus.

On a personal level, Chiron in Taurus brings up questions of material security, what we truly value, and how we value ourselves. It can also be a time when we’re asked to tune into our own bodies and pay attention to the messages they’re giving us. Questions that may arise:
- What old beliefs about love, care, money, or comfort need to be re-evaluated?
- What financial vulnerabilities around possessions, income, food, housing need your attention now?
- What is your relationship with your body, and what needs to be healed?
- Where have you been compromising, accepting less than your values, or trading authenticity for security?
When we layer this brief Venus transit on top of Chiron’s longer-term story in Taurus, we can expect the following wounds to surface visibly:
- Relationships as a mirror — an encounter with “the other” in your life could stir sensitivity around desirability, lovability, attractiveness, or judgment.
- Desire meets scarcity — questions of whether it’s safe to ask, receive, trust, or become emotionally open.
- Money and exchange — issues around payments, pricing, debt, unequal contribution, shared resources, and dependency, along with the emotions surrounding them.
- Intimacy and boundaries — revelations about close relationships that may involve excessive control, rescuing, possessiveness, secrecy, or “prove it to me” behavior.
- Body and sensuality — deeper psychology surfacing more intensely around self-worth and physical self-image.
Uranus Turns Retrograde
Finally, the planet of disruption, change, and sudden events, Uranus, turns retrograde on September 10 at 05:41of Gemini. This typically opens a period during which one’s internal work is subjected to restlessness, upheaval, or even insightful breakthroughs arriving in the form of ideas, assumptions, communication habits, or new information.
The question that may arise from within: What belief, narrative, language pattern, or information habit has become too narrow for who I’m becoming?
Given Uranus’s connection to revolution, this transit could aptly be called a private revolution of thought or a reworking of the stories we’ve told ourselves.
The retrograde period lasts roughly 151 days, until February 8, 2027. Handled well, it can leave you with new ways of thinking, communicating, and seeing reality, ways that feel more original, truthful, and flexible. Look at the house in your chart containing Gemini to see where this revisionary process may unfold, and check any natal planets, angles, nodes, or chart rulers contacted during the transit for further insight.

New Moon in Virgo
Also on September 10, at 11:26 PM, comes the New Moon in Virgo. Paired with Uranus turning retrograde, this kicks off a period of critical analysis, discernment, and getting organized, one that may arrive in flashes of inspiration and insight yearning to break free of old patterns.
This can mark a new cycle oriented towards self-improvement, sharper daily discernment, and making life more practical. The central question that may arise: What small, realistic change would make daily life healthier, clearer, more skillful, and more aligned with my actual priorities?
The strongest influence on this New Moon is a tight sextile from Cancer Mars, a nuance that brings initiative grounded in emotion. Mars wants to act, so this lunation may feel more energized or urgent, particularly around matters of protecting, supporting, or strengthening family and home life. With the earth/water elemental mix at play, this translates into useful work: emotion becomes planning, caregiving gets systemized, and concerns get spelled out clearly.
September 15: Pluto Takes Center Stage
September 15 brings an abundance of Pluto activity. Scorpio Venus reaches 03°16′ and forms a square to Aquarius Pluto, also at 03°16′. At the very same moment, Aries Neptune sits at 03°16′, sextile to Pluto.
This is a complicated moment, combining the intensity of a Scorpio Venus, desiring intimacy, loyalty, pleasure, financial exchange, and emotional truth, with Pluto’s proclivity to expose what’s buried within a relationship pattern or power exchange. This square carries the potential for magnetic attraction, strong reactions, intensified longings, value conflicts, or a forced rise above superficiality.
There’s also a collision by sign: Scorpio versus Aquarius, where the square’s tension plays out as a struggle between personal intensity and detachment, exclusivity and freedom, or private desire and social ideals.
Meanwhile, the sextile between Neptune and Pluto suggests a softening of Pluto’s Aquarian urge to dismantle and rebuild. Aries Neptune adds vision, courage, instinct, and openness to act from an imaginal or spiritual place. Together, fire and air move these manifestations toward activation. Even though Venus only aspects Pluto directly (not Neptune) in this moment, its position lets us infer that the Neptune-Pluto sextile colors the Venus-Pluto square too, likely bringing a wider sense of vision, longing, and transformational possibility to whatever Venus touches.
Venus’s role here is that of a trigger: the possibility of a relationship emerging, an artistic impulse arising, a financial decision being made, or a desire being exposed that connects to the broader, multi-year Plutonian shift already underway.
September 23: Autumnal Equinox
On September 23, we celebrate the Autumnal Equinox as the Sun enters Libra. At this moment of balanced light and darkness, the year begins its symbolic descent toward the Winter Solstice, each day yielding a little more light to the steadily lengthening night. This seasonal turning invites release, reflection, and a shift inward from ego toward soul.

Autumn is often a time to refine identity and beliefs, transforming what spring and summer set in motion into a deeper awareness of our place in the developmental cycle. During Libra’s phase of this three-part transition, the soul seeks gratitude, perspective, balance, and justice. Scorpio then deepens the inward descent, while Sagittarius opens an exploration of meaning and broader perspective. Together, the equinox begins a period of loosening the ego’s hold so a more integrated, holistic sense of meaning can emerge.
September 26: Full Moon in Aries
The Full Moon at 03°37′ Aries on September 26 brings a matter to illumination, culmination, or decision. Aries gives the lunation an imperative quality: something calls for initiative, courage, self-definition, or an honest acknowledgment of personal desire. What has been developing since the Virgo New Moon may now reach a point where preparation must become action.
Yet this isn’t a purely straightforward call to act. The Moon’s close conjunction with Neptune in Aries heightens sensitivity, intuition, idealism, imagination, and longing. It can reveal a vision that’s deeply motivating, spiritually meaningful, or creatively inspired, but Neptune can also blur facts, motives, boundaries, and expectations. You may feel compelled by a dream, a hope, a rescue fantasy, or an idealized image of what’s possible before all the practical details are known.
Saturn’s presence in Aries adds a more sober undertone. Though too distant to carry Neptune’s immediate force, Saturn raises questions of responsibility, consequences, limits, timing, maturity, and sustained commitment. The issue isn’t necessarily whether the vision is valid, but whether it can be given a viable structure. The tension may lie between a desire to move boldly toward an inspiring possibility and the recognition that meaningful action requires patience, accountability, and realistic planning.
Because this Aries Moon opposes the Libra Sun, these developments are likely to arise through relationship, agreement, negotiation, or awareness of another person’s needs and expectations. The Full Moon can expose tension between individual initiative and cooperation, directness and diplomacy, personal desire and mutual obligation, or the need to act independently versus the need to preserve fairness within a partnership. The task is neither to sacrifice yourself for harmony nor to pursue a private agenda without regard for relational consequences.
The constructive use of this Full Moon: let an authentic desire become visible, then test it. Clarify assumptions, verify information, name boundaries, and distinguish a genuine intuitive summons from an emotionally compelling projection. Aries supplies the courage to begin; Libra asks for ethical and reciprocal terms; Neptune provides the vision; and Saturn asks what can be carried forward.
One final note: this lunation is strongly colored by and activates the longer-term Uranus/Neptune/Pluto pattern, through its connection to Neptune.
September 28: Mars Enters Leo
On September 28, Mars enters Leo, increasing the impulse toward bold action, creative self-expression, leadership, and visibility. This can be a favorable period for taking initiative, promoting your work, performing, competing, or pursuing a passion with confidence. The caution is against ego battles, dramatic overreach, or forcing recognition, Mars in Leo works best when courage is matched with generosity, genuine talent, and respect for others’ contributions.
And with that, here we go into the increasing darkness, but also into a time that offers deep review and the release of what no longer serves the higher path of the soul. I personally love this time of year, when the air grows crisper and the landscape fills with yellows, golds, browns, and orange.
