When I begin an astrological reading, I go to great lengths to describe just what it is the person is looking at when they see their natal chart for the first time. Using a variety of descriptions when I do this, the one that elicits the most affirmative response is “this is how the universe was operating when you took your first breath”. I further add, “in that moment, the universe, source, or if you prefer, God, was manifesting an energetic imprint, that you inherited, and it became your operating system.” It is with this operating system that you process life. A system that carries with it, certain proclivities, tendencies, traits, emotions, intellectual capacity, spiritual inclinations, and desires that vary person to person. Believing then that there are energies that we already possess at birth, I characterize this part of us as being fateful.
Within this energetic imprint, there exists a range of possibilities. A second factor that impacts this is our free will. We make choices everyday as to how we wish to respond to our inherited persona. This tight wire act between the fateful call from our operating system, and our willful decisions determines where our journeys end up. Sometimes we are living more willfully, other times more fatefully. In my opinion, when we learn to strike a balance between these, the middle path, we can find the clarity and peace we desire.
What does seem evident to me is that the range of possibilities I mention, is permitted by whatever higher power or force is sitting behind the curtain; so, to speak. For thousands of years, life in its many forms has been wildly dancing through time and space manifesting in endless ways. There is joy and sadness, kindness and cruelty, love and hate, sickness and health, wealth and poverty, courage and fear, just to name a few elements of the human experience.
In last week’s blog, I concluded with some passages from the poem, Desiderata. They bear repeating again in the context of this week’s blog post. It opens like this:
“GO PLACIDLY amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.” He ends it like this: “And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.”
Sometimes, life can be perceived as a punishment of some type. What is happening in any given moment could and often is viewed as a penance being inflicted by some unseen force, or as a result of some action or behavior. Though I would agree, choices do have consequences, I would also postulate that much of we encounter in this life is part of a process much grander than our minds can conceive. Take for instance this scripture in which the disciples ask Jesus a question:
His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" replied Jesus, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him."
To me, what is being said here is that, like the natal chart, that represents something the universe wants to manifest in a given moment, things we may perceive as cruel, unjust or a punishment, are more likely part of bigger picture that is not visible to our human eyes. In my most honest moments, I must admit it has been through things that I have initially characterized as cruel or unfair that some of my greatest insight and growth has occurred. When we learn to recognize that our angst surrounding the incongruities of life is unproductive, and we do as the mystics throughout time have suggested - “let go”, we find a greater ability to move through time and space trusting that we are part of something bigger than our own egos. Peace will follow.
