Being Calm

A few weeks ago, I posted four simple words on Instagram… “Calm is a Superpower”. I heard from many people that this had a huge impact on them. When we think of superpowers, our minds drift to flying, invisibility, amazing strength, and in even controlling the elements. Rarely, if ever, have I heard of “calm” being referred to as a superpower, but it surely is! Think of the impact a calming, reassuring voice can have on you at the right moment. Think of how disarming it is when you are full of angst or anxiety and that special person shows up with a calm and peaceful demeanor and seemingly dissolves that energy in an instant using nothing but the pure unbridled force of their calmness.

How does this occur? The truth is that it's all vibrational. We emit a field of energy. Sometimes we are conscious of it and sometimes it happens on an unconscious level. Those who develop a heightened awareness of their own energy have a distinct advantage over those who don’t. Harnessing the power of calm is a goal that we should all strive for; a resource that truly is a superpower. Rudyard Kipling said it well in his infamous poem, IF:

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too…

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it

I am also reminded of what was likely a tenuous situation during which Jesus was confronted by the scribes and Pharisees. The story goes that they forcefully dragged a woman to the temple where Jesus was teaching who had been accused of adultery. One could imagine a crowd suddenly surrounding Jesus, angry, clutching stones in their hands, ready to inflict what they believed to be justice under their laws. Asking Jesus if he agreed with them that the woman should be stoned, he knelt down, calmly, and began to draw in the dirt, acting as if he did not hear them. This was surely disarming to the mob.

After what likely seemed an eternity, and under the barrage of continued questioning, Jesus finally rose up from a kneeling position and in a calm and poignant manner proclaimed, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” Game over. Stones were dropped, the crowd dispersed in shame. The moment had suddenly turned serene and Jesus bid the woman an encouraging farewell. Calm is a superpower.

And so, it is dear reader, that I encourage you to find your calm place. Life will conspire to knock you off your game, but find your way back to center. Do those things you need to each and every day to maintain your calm. It is truly in that place you will find great power that you can not only use to bless yourself but all those who cross your path. And maybe you too can make others drop the stones they are clinging to.
