A Species with Amnesia

Highly advanced civilizations have been here before us, just to be destroyed by some great global catastrophe. If we are right about the age of our planet, there is a 4.5-billion-year history stretching out in our rearview mirror. We have zircon crystals that we can date at 4.3 billion years old. Given that our windows of perception are on average limited to 70-90-years, it’s hard to wrap our minds around such a concept. But if you assumed humans had been here since the beginning (which no one currently believes) that would represent approximately 56 million lifetimes. Just think what has occurred in this current 90-year window.

These are things we know happened, recent history, but what about the stuff we don’t know? There are many people who have done very serious research that has led them to conclude that history as we know it is not complete and in many instances just flat out wrong. Are there whole civilizations that have come and gone on this planet for which we have no written history? Does their memory live on in myth and oral traditions? I am one who believes so, and further believes, believing otherwise is arrogant and naïve. If we just go back to the last Ice Age which was 21,000 years ago, there were ice sheets as much as two miles thick sitting on Northern Europe and North America. This gave us a sea level that was four hundred feet lower than today which changes the map dramatically from how we currently know it. In fact, it is estimated that more than ten million square miles was swallowed by rising sea levels at the end of the last ice age. This occurred over a 10,000-year period. This of course gave rise to periods of dramatic flooding which often happened in short periods of time. It was accompanied by enormous volcanic and seismic activity. Numerous researchers are concluding that it is during this period that the “great flood” epics came into being. The flood would have been a global event.

Turning briefly to Plato, we find the earliest surviving reference to a lost continent he called Atlantis. He claimed to have gotten the story from Solon (640 BC – 559 BC), known as one of the Seven Sages of Greece, and, more secretly, a Keeper of the Journal. At some point in his life, Solon met a priest in Egypt who told him the story of Atlantis. The story was of a magnificent ancient civilization that disappeared 9,000 years earlier. It was a tale of ancient empires, natural catastrophes and a great war. Doing the math, that’s 9,600 BC or 11,000 years ago from now. Hmmm, that would represent the peak of the melt-down of the Ice Age. If Plato just made this up, as some propose, then its amazing that he chose a date that coincides with this period of great flooding.

The flood epic is universal. It’s in India’s history, in Greece, the Mayans had it as well as they indicate in their records that the end of the last world age was brought about by a great flood, the biblical flood of Noah which seems to find its origins in the Gilgamesh epic of Sumer of which we have surviving written records that go back close to 5,000 years, and Aboriginal stories of the “great flood serpent” eating up the land. Have these memories been passed down in folklore from generation to generation? To me, this makes imminent sense. Why wouldn’t our ancestors have memorialized such events?

The problem is that the mainstream view of this period postulates that we only had stone-age hunter gathers present at this time to remember these events. But what is extremely odd about that theory is that we have a series of maps dating to that very period that show a level of sophistication well beyond hunter-gatherers; a level more in line with civilized societies. Many of these maps were rescued from the library of Alexandria when it was burned.

Off the coast of Japan there is an area known as Yonaguni. There are huge megaliths piled on top of each other and side by side in a very uniform manner. They are extremely large and weigh about 150 tons each. Amazingly, we have maps of this area showing the area around Japan looking completely different during the period of 13,000 years ago, prior to what would have been the great flood. Those who have dived in this area claim this place is majestic and has an atmosphere and aura of a sacred place like no where else. In this same spot lie the famous steps of Yonaguni. Beautifully cut out of bedrock with perfect lines. It’s a magical place.

In the waters west of Okinawa lies an incredible stone circle hewn out of bedrock at a depth of around 150 feet. This is perhaps one of the most compellingly peculiar discoveries off the coasts of Japan because even skeptical geologists cannot come up with any natural process that could have created this stone circle.

In India, researcher Graham Hancock and his wife befriended a group of fishermen who told them of ruins off the coast in the Gulf of Cambay that no one was willing to listen to them about. The fishermen considered them a nuisance because of the problems it caused with their nets. In 2002, Graham was able to obtain permission from the Indian government to do a dive in this area. Underwater ruins were immediately discovered. There is no dispute at all about these ruins being man-made.

Then there is the Bimini Road. Located in waters west of the bluff of North Bimini are beautiful square blocks and perfectly straight alignments of stones referred to as The Bimini Road. Fifteen hundred feet long, these stones lie in an orderly row. It is believed that this was part of the road system.

Moving now above water, are there numerous historical structures that have perhaps been designated to an incorrect historical period? Beginning in Giza, home of the Great Sphinx which faces east. The Sphinx was created by cutting out its core body from the bedrock and creating a ditch around it. All of that rock was then moved forward and two huge temples were constructed. There is an interesting theory currently being presented that the Sphinx is much older than currently believed. The evidence of geology is such that the Sphinx and its trench were subjected to thousands of years of very heavy rain fall. The problem, no such rainfall has occurred in Egypt from the time of the Pharaohs until today.

When we go back to the period of 12-13,000 years ago, it becomes evident that something extraordinary occurred. In an article published on May 22, 2007 entitled “Did a comet wipe out prehistoric Americans?” there is a fascinating discussion of this event. The article can be found on NewScientist.com and was written by Heather Pringle. It seems the earth was struck by a gigantic comet that hit North America and fragmented as far away as Europe and was likely responsible for huge extinctions all around the world.

Another extraordinary fact of the construction in the ancient world is the correlation between temples, pyramids and of buildings and astrological formations. The math and precision of it is astounding. Equinox markers, alignments with constellations, and even accommodations for the procession of the equinoxes. It all raises the question of could this all have something to do with the comet that hit the earth some 13,000 years ago. Were the ancient’s perhaps encoding a warning? I, of course, can’t answer that but it does make one wonder.

There is a view that this is what the Mayan calendar was all about, the return of this destructive comet to earth. I hope not. An alternative view of this, and the one I prefer, is that what is coming now is not a comet or some other destructive event but rather a rebirth of humanity in some form of higher consciousness; a better world. This is sometimes supported by the movement of our Sun toward the galactic center of the Milky Way galaxy (which is happening) as being a signification of a cosmic rebirth. The sun enters the womb of the galaxy and former world age ends and a new world age begins.

In conclusion, I want to leave you with a prophecy given by Asclepius, known as a god of medicine in ancient Greece. It comes from a Hermetic text and is entitled “The Lament”. This is a dialogue between the god Toth, Hermes and Asclepius.

“Do you know Asclepius, that Egypt is an image of heaven? Or to speak more exactly, in Egypt, all the operations of the powers which rule and work in heaven are present in the earth below. In fact, it should be said that the whole cosmos dwells in this our land as in a sanctuary. And yet, since it is fitting that wise men should have knowledge of all events before they come to pass, you must not be left in ignorance of what I will now tell you. There will come a time when where it will have been in vain that Egyptians have honored the godhead with heartfelt piety and service and all our holy worship will be fruitless and ineffectual. The gods will return from earth to heaven, Egypt will be forsaken, and the land that was once the home of religion will be left desolate, bereft of the presence of its deities. Oh Egypt, Egypt of thy religion nothing will remain but an empty tale which thine own children in time to come will not believe. Nothing will be left but graven words, only the stones will tell of thy piety. And in that day men will be weary of life, and they will cease to think the universe worthy of reverent wonder and worship. They will no longer love this world around us, this incomparable work of God this glorious structure which he has built. This sum of good made up of many diverse forms, this instrument whereby the will of God operates in that which he has made. Ungrudgingly favoring man’s welfare. This combination and accumulation of all the manifold things that call forth the veneration, adoration, praise and love of the beholder. Darkness will be preferred to light and death will be thought more profitable than life. No one will raise his eyes to heaven. The pious will be deemed insane, the impious wise, the madman will be thought a brave man and the wicked will be esteemed as good. As for the soul and the belief that it is immortal by nature or may hope to obtain immortality as I have taught you, all this they will mock and even persuade themselves that it is false. No word of reverence or piety, no utterance worthy of heaven will be heard or believed. And so, the gods will depart from mankind, a grievous thing, and only evil angels will remain, who will mingle with man and drive the poor wretches into all manner of reckless crime, into wars and robberies and frauds. And all things hostile to the nature of the soul. Then will the earth tremble that the sea will bear no ship, heaven will not support the stars in their orbits, all voices of the gods will be forced into silence, the fruits will rot, the soil be barren and the very air will sicken with sullen stagnation. All things will be disordered and awry. All good will disappear. But when this has befallen Asclepius, then God the creator of all things will look all on that has come to pass and will stop the disorder by the counter force of his will, which is the good. He will call back to right path those who have gone astray, he will cleanse the world of evil, washing it away with floods, burning it out with the fiercest of fire and expelling it with war and pestilence. And thus, he will bring back his world to its former aspect so that the cosmos will once more be deemed worthy of worship and wondering reverence. And God, the maker and maintainer of the mighty fabric will be adored by the men of that day with continuous songs of praise and blessing. Such is the new birth of the cosmos. It is a making again of all things good, a holy and awe-inspiring of all nature and it is wrought inside the process of time by the eternal will of the creator.”
