Earlier in my life I practiced a religion that frequently posed three questions to people they were hoping to convert to their beliefs. They are:
· Who am I?
· Why am I here?
· Where am I going?
The questions are by no measure original in nature but rather universal musings that have existed for humans for as long as we have been able to consider them; and they remain so today. For me, Astrology has offered a new level of understanding when pondering these questions. Let’s explore a few ideas together….
Time is a mystery. Clocks tell us what time it is but they cannot tell us what time it self is. What is it we are actually measuring? Enter Einstein. He discovered that time could run at different rates. There isn’t time in terms of a universal tick-tock, there are times. He came to this shocking revelation by discovering a hidden connection between space and time. What he was able to figure out is there is a profound connection between motion through space and the passage of time. Roughly speaking the more you have of one the less you have of the other. Time runs more slowly for the person who is moving. The reason we don’t experience this here on earth is because at the slow speeds we are moving, motions impact on things here on earth is not detected; but the effect is real and can be measured.
One of the things Einstein is famous for is the fusing of time and space together into a four-dimensional model known as space-time. The mind-bending realization that came from all of this is that the sharp difference we see between past, present and future may be an illusion. This theory proposes that every moment of the earth orbiting the Sun and every moment throughout the entire universe, we would see every event that has ever happened or will ever happen. From the birth of our universe and the Big Bang some 14 billion years ago, to the formation of stars and the Milky Way galaxy, to the creation of earth 4.5 billion years ago, to the time of the dinosaurs, to events happening on earth today. That leads to the now.
Let’s consider what might be happening right now. It might be the tick of noon on my office clock, a pigeon in Venice is taking flight at this very moment, a meteor is just now hitting the moon or a star is exploding at the far reaches of the universe. All of these events are taking place at what I think of as the same moment of time but at different locations in our universe, all make up what I intuitively think of as now.
You can picture these events as lying on a single slice of space-time, let’s call it a “now slice”. Think of space-time as a loaf of bread or pie. There are different ways to cut space-time into individual “now slices”. That is, because motion affects the passage of time, someone who is moving will have a different conception of what is happening right now; cutting the loaf into different “now slices” from varying angles. Picture the person who is moving tilting the knife and craving out the bread or pie at a different angle than the perfect parallel cuts we commonly see in sliced bread.
I would now like to switch to Astrology (astro-logos), and more specifically the birth moment. For those who might not know, Astrology means “knowledge of the stars”. What Astrology does is translate the earth’s movement relative to the stars into a system of timings that determine the unfolding of events; as above, so below. A person’s natal chart (horoscope from Greek meaning “marker of the hour”), is a plane that slices through a spiraling solar system at the time of our birth, tilted to reflect where and when we were born. What most do not realize is that our Sun does not sit idly in one spot, but moves through space and time at great speed. In fact, current estimates are our Sun travels approximately 1,166,400 miles per day; dragging our entire planetary system along in its gravitational field.
It is from this spiraling body (which incidentally resembles the DNA molecule when you plot its movement) that our soul (energy) is plucked and planted on this pale blue dot suspended in a sunbeam to live our life in human form. If you agree with the belief that everything is energy, it follows that we inherit an energetic imprint at our first breath that possesses what was being expressed by the universe in that moment. That “now slice”, becomes an angle from which we view the world, express ourselves, share our feelings, dream our dreams and fulfill our destiny.
We are a slice of the cosmic pie…
